	Functional Skills will soon be a must-pass element of every Apprenticeship.
	Functional Skills are becoming the standard Skills for Life/Adult Basic Skills qualification.
	Functional Skills contribute about 50% of the marks in the new English, ICT and maths GCSEs.

Functional Skills Are “Different”

	Competence not compensation. There is no “body of knowledge”, so learners have to demonstrate they have secured (or mastered) skills. That’s different!
	Securing/Mastery. The ability to identify and use the appropriate skills in any novel situation. It’s like “transferable”, only more so!
	No “teaching to the test” – so learners (and teachers) don’t know what the exams are going to look like. A major challenge!
