    Why Functional Skills?

    Why Functional Skills?

Functional Skills will contribute about 50% of new GCSE marks in English and Maths
Must-pass element of vocational Diplomas – an important responsibility within your consortium
Important standalone qualification that will be recognised in the new School Report Card (replacing Performance Tables)

    Functional Skills Matter to Learners

Jack starts on his Diploma course in September but he won’t get his Diploma without standalone passes in all 3 Functional Skills subjects.

The principle learning, PLTS, work related learning, etc may all be great – but can you afford to take a chance on Functional Skills?
Jill is in year 8, so she will be doing the “new” GCSEs – which means about 50% of her marks will depend on Functional Skills.

Lots of pupils capable of good GCSE passes are failing Functional Skills – how can we stop Jill being one of them?
Jeff may struggle to get any GCSEs but Functional Skills offers an engaging way for him to develop and master essential skills.

Many schools have discovered Functional Skills are a valuable lifelong qualification, that support literacy and numeracy and help school performance criteria.

    Functional Skills Are “Different”

Competence not compensation. There is no “body of knowledge”, so learners have to demonstrate mastery. That’s different!
Mastery. The ability to identify and use the appropriate skills in any novel situation.
It’s like “transferrable”, only more so!
No “teaching to the test” – so learners (and teachers) don’t know what the exams are going to look like.
    A major challenge!
